FAQs

One third of cancers can be prevented by following a healthy lifestyle; including by being physically active every day, enjoying a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy body weight. Every year in Australia around 37,000 cancer cases could be avoided by prevention alone.

In response to this, we created The March Charge. We’re taking a head on approach to beating cancer and for the whole month of March we’re telling cancer where to go. By taking part, you’ll be reducing your cancer risk, promoting physical activity and helping raise vital funds for cancer research, prevention, advocacy and support.

How much does it cost to register?

It is FREE to register and participate in The March Charge.

Register here to start your Charge and tell cancer where to go!

When and where  is The March Charge?

The March Charge is an online, month long personal challenge that starts on the 1 March 2018 and runs through until the 31 March 2018.

Participants can walk or run solo or with friends/family anywhere and anytime during March.

What do I do?

Charge at cancer!

  1. Register – Enter your details, set your fundraising target, set your kilometre target and get ready
  2. Promote – Enlist support and seek donations by sharing your personal fundraising page URL with your networks
  3. Charge – Start Charging and tracking your kilometres from 1st March 2018

How far do I have to Charge?

The March Charge is a personal challenge not a race, so you can choose how many kilometres you’ll charge during March. You want to challenge yourself though so your friends get behind you.

Our fitness partner Can Too recommend estimating your kilometre goal as follows:

Walkers

We recommend if you’re starting out to aim for 10KM per week – so set your goal at 40KM (x4 weeks).

If you’re a regular walker – aim high, 40KM per week – so set your goal at 160KM (x4 weeks).

Our fitness partner Can Too have the following guide:

  • Beginner walkers 10-40KM in March
  • Intermediate walkers 40-120KM in March
  • Advanced walkers 120KM+ in March
  • Remember, you can always change your goal if you feel you have aimed too high or too low.

Runners

We recommend if you’re starting out to aim for something low like 5KM per week – so set your goal at 20KM (x4 weeks).

If you’re an advance runner – aim high, 25KM per week – so set your goal at 100KM (x4 weeks).

These are only guidelines and will not be displayed anywhere on your fundraising page, so choose the option closest to your level of ability or just a bit above to challenge yourself.

Our fitness partner Can Too have the following guide:

  • Beginner runners: 5-35KM in March
  • Intermediate 35-85KM in March
  • Advanced runners 85KM+ in March

Remember you can always update this throughout the month if you find you're Charging through.

Can I Charge in a team?

Apart from just being really good fun, exercising in a group is a great motivator. It will help you to keep pushing yourself to reach your goal because everyone is doing it! You’ll never miss a session because you won’t want to let the team down!

It’s also a great opportunity to socialise, so when you’re tossing up between clocking up some kilometres and or catching up with friends, you can do both!

How do I update my kilometre goal?

You can update your kilometre goal by logging into your fundraising page and heading to the 'My Fitness Activity' tab. Set your new target distance, scroll down and 'Save Changes' and you're done!

How do I track kilometres when I Charge?

Any GPS enabled devices like fitness wristbands or watches (think Fitbit, Garmin etc) will do the trick. We have linked up with Strava, Fitbit and mapmyfitness to automatically sync with your fundraising page and add to your kilometres each time you record an activity.

If you’re not already connected with these devices, you can always use your Smartphone and download Strava, Fitbit or mapmyfitness to get started.

Once installed and your account has been created with your preferred app, login to your The March Charge profile page and head to the 'My Fitness Activity' tab. Here you can now connect up to your preferred fitness app. Click on the icon of the app you'd like to connect - this will ask you to login and authorise us to access your fitness account.

You're now connected!

When using your fitness app, remember to create a new activity through your app and stop when you're finished each time - this will ensure your kilometres are recorded onto your The March Charge page.

You can also manually add an activity through the 'My Fitness Activity' tab too.

My Fitbit activity is not appearing on my page. What do I do?

If your activity is not appearing on your dashboard please follow these steps.

  1. Make sure your Fitbit is synced with your The March Charge dashboard
  2. Start and Stop each activity from your Fitbit app
  3. Allow 24 hours for your activity to appear on your dashboard

If your activity is not appearing you can manually add your KMs via the My Fitness Activity tab on your dashboard.

How do I track my kilometres with Fitbit?

Tracking your kilomtres with Fitbit is easy.

Login to your The March Charge profile page and head to the 'My Fitness Activity' tab. Here you can connect up to your preferred fitness app. Click on the Fitbit icon - this will ask you to login and authorise us to access your fitness account.

Please note you must record an “activity" with your Fitbit in order for it to contribute to your kilometres.

Download our guide to tracking your activity here - Charging with Fitbit.

Can I walk or run on a treadmill?

Of course!

If the great outdoors isn’t your thing and you’d prefer to hit the gym, that’s fine! Just remember to take note of how many kilometres you clock up each session and update the kilometre counter on your dashboard page.

The added bonus of a treadmill is that a rainy day won’t get in the way!

Cancer Council’s Exercise for People Living with Cancer booklet features step-by-step instructions and illustrations for 20 simple exercises and provides general information on starting an exercise program after a cancer diagnosis.

Can I cycle, swim or do another activity?

You certainly can! This year the website is just focussing on running and walking but you are more than welcome to do another activity if that suits you better. Simply register for either Run or Walk, update your story on your Profile Page under 'Update Your Blog' to let your sponsors know that you are doing another activity and set yourself a kilometre goal best suited to your ability and activity.

Can I track kilograms benched or steps taken?

The March Charge is a physical challenge aimed at encouraging people to be active whilst raising money for a good cause. So as long as you are pushing yourself to achieve your physical and fundraising goals we would love you to take part.

Simply register for either Run or Walk, update your story on your Profile Page under 'Update Your Blog' to let your sponsors know what your activity is and set yourself a goal that is best suited to your activity. You will be able to track your activity if you sync up to a Fitness App and you can keep updating your blog to let your sponsors know how you are tracking.

Can I have walkers and runners in my team?

Unfortunately everyone in your team has to be registered for the same activity (walk or run).

However if a team member wants to do another all they have to do is set their own kilometre goal that is suitable for their activity and update the ‘My Story’ section on their Profile Page under 'Update Your Blog' to let their sponsors know what they are doing. They can keep sponsors updated by posting to their blog and updating their activity tracker.

My kilometres aren't showing on my page

To be fair to everyone participating in The March Charge we will only start tracking kilometres from the 1st March 2018. If you are keen to get started now you can still sync your profile page with one of the suggested fitness trackers and keep track of your progress in their app.

Where does my donation go?

Every dollar you raise will raise vital funds for cancer research, advocacy, and prevention programs, as well as information and support services.

I just recorded an activity from the GPS device but it’s not showing on my profile?

Activity from the fitness apps comes through the following day so please allow 24hrs for your walk or run.
