We're taking part in The March Charge with Cancer Council and telling cancer where to go! Sadly cancer still takes too many of us, with 1 in 2 Australians being diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85.
For us, this is an important opportunity to give back after seeing firsthand the wonderful work Cancer Council undertakes supporting those living with cancer and their loved ones.
Our lives were radically changed when Michelle (wife/mother/mother-in-law) was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer in July 2020. From the moment we learnt of her diagnosis, all of our lives were suddenly plagued with uncertainty, occupied by fear and a desire to understand what was next. For our family, Cancer Council became a source of support, reliable and helpful information and hope. We became educated in her diagnosis, which took the fear and power out of words like ‘Stage 4’, ‘malignant’ and ‘terminal’, which became part of our vocabulary. In doing so, it meant we could focus on the most important thing, which was supporting Michelle and each other as she underwent a gruelling 6 months of chemotherapy.
In December 2020, against all of the odds, our family was rewarded with the greatest gift of all, news that the cancer which had taken up residency in multiple parts of Michelle’s body was gone. She was in remission. She was in remission because of the money raised by organisations such as Cancer Council which has helped fund incredible research into understanding and treating different cancers. She was in remission because her fighting spirit never went out while she was undergoing treatment in part due to the support and resources made available to her through Cancer Council. Our reward was the gift of having Michelle continue to enrich our lives every day, filling it with love, joy and happiness.
While this March we March4Michelle, this isn’t just for our Michelle, but for all the truly special people in our lives and the lives of others who have or are currently fighting cancer. Each step we take during March is for them and those who also are no longer with us in body, but every step of the way in spirit.
We know Michelle’s journey is not over, nor is it for many others whose lives are also impacted by cancer. So let’s rally together and do what we can to beat this awful disease.
Your donations and support are greatly appreciated.
