Charging for Change: Why the Blues Are Walking, Running and Leading the Way This March
This March, the Armidale Blues are trading tackles and tip‑offs for trainers and step counts as we officially join The March Charge, Cancer Council’s month‑long walk and run challenge. As a club built on community, resilience and looking after our own, this is a natural extension of who we are and what we stand for.
The March Charge is simple but powerful: set a personal kilometre goal for the month of March, get moving, and raise funds for cancer research and support services. It’s flexible, inclusive and designed so everyone can participate at their own pace – whether you’re a first‑grade forward, a netball mid‑courter, a life member on the sideline or a parent pushing a pram around the block.
This year marks the 10‑year anniversary of The March Charge, and the numbers already tell a story of national impact: thousands of Australians lacing up, and hundreds of thousands of dollars raised to support people affected by cancer. For the Blues, it’s also a chance to recognise that cancer is not an abstract issue; it has touched families, friends and teammates across our club, sometimes quietly and sometimes very close to home.
Our goal is ambitious because our community is strong. Under “The Armidale Blues” team banner, we’re aiming to raise $5,000 and collectively log 5,000 kilometres over the month. On paper, that looks like at least 50 people averaging around 3 kilometres per day and about $100 each in fundraising. In reality, we’re backing our players, supporters, sponsors and the broader Armidale community to go well beyond that.
But this isn’t just about numbers. Throughout March, we’ll be creating space for those in our club who have a personal connection to cancer to share their stories – short interviews, posts and videos that remind us why every kilometre and every donation matters. The focus is not on who tops the leaderboard, but on the people and families who stand to benefit from better research, better screening and better treatment.
Of course, we also know that a little healthy competition never hurt a sporting club. With the support of our sponsors and local businesses, we’ll be putting together prizes and hampers for our top performers, recognising not just distance covered but also fundraising effort and community spirit. Weekly updates and leaderboards will keep everyone accountable, motivated and maybe just a little bit competitive.
To cap off the month, we’re planning a community fun‑run day at Moran Oval on the final weekend of March. With 2 km, 5 km and 8 km options, a BBQ, presentations and sponsor visibility, it will be a celebration of everything the month is about: fitness, community, generosity and the unmistakable Blues spirit. Whether you run, walk, jog or cheer from the sideline, it will be a day for everyone.
Ultimately, The March Charge is more than a fundraiser for us. It’s a statement about the kind of club we want to be – one that competes hard on the field and court, but also shows up for the big battles off it. This March, we’re not just preparing for a season; we’re Charging for change, together.
