The March Charge 2026

I am Charging for my Dad, Matthew Emery

I'm taking on The March Charge...

because of my dad's story:

In 2017, my father Matthew Emery became ill and was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer—a disease that affects 1 in 16 Australians. Thanks to incredible doctors, he underwent surgery followed by chemotherapy and was eventually told the cancer was gone.

About a year later, it returned, this time in his liver. What followed was a relentless cycle: surgery after surgery, countless rounds of chemotherapy, each time being told it was gone—only for it to come back again.

In 2024, the cancer returned once more as terminal. This time, surgery was no longer an option. He went through more chemotherapy, and when that stopped working, immunotherapy. Despite everything, the cancer continued to spread—from his liver to his lungs, then to his lymph nodes. He was told he had less than two years to live.

In 2025, my dad was still considered healthy. He was working as a truck driver, travelling, and living his life. Then October came, along with his final trip to Tasmania, and his health began to rapidly decline. He struggled to walk, his appetite disappeared, and he became increasingly confused. Within just two weeks, he was no longer the same. Hospital visits became frequent, until the 12th of November, when he passed away—far sooner than anyone expected.

Cancer is a cruel disease my dad would never have wished on anyone. At just 61 years old, he lost his battle. I share his story because cancer does not discriminate and remains the leading cause of death in Australia.

This is why I’m walking for the March Charge.

A month-long fitness challenge to raise funds for world-class cancer research.

This year marks 10 years of The March Charge, a decade of Aussies getting active and raising millions to support people impacted by cancer. I’m proud to be part of this movement and Charge for Change.

Sadly, an estimated 169,000 Australians will hear the the words “you have cancer” this year. I’m doing my part to change this by getting active and fundraising for those affected.

Please sponsor me today and make every kilometre count! Every dollar raised will help fund Cancer Council’s life-saving research, prevention programs, and support services.

Together, we can tell cancer where to go. Feel the Charge and join me in making a difference!
