Running the Distance I Know I Can't

Today was supposed to be a rest day. Throughout the day I felt underworked and lethargic so I decided to break my schedule and not only skip this rest day but also run after work.

I never run after work, but I am grateful I did.

I felt warmed up from the day and eased into the workout much easier than my cold start mornings. Despite this less stressful start, I still thought 6km after 3 days of 8km was asking too much of my body. I told myself this lower tempo 6km would still be a "rest day".  At 3km into the run I felt incredibly ready to quit. After all, it was still a rest day right?

I ended up running 8km anyway.

This run gets to the core of an idea I have been toying with for the last few days. None of this would be possible if I hadn't made the consistent conscious decision to choose the workout I know I can't do.

I started my running journey about a year ago. Sloppy at first. I think over my first 6 months I ran less them 50km total. Inconsistent, slow, and unmotivated would be my description of this period. Now I am running almost an hour a day - every day. Running distances that would seem absurd to myself last December.

I'm starting to understand that this new mentality is treating my runs as an exercise for my brain, not my body. My body has handled whatever distance I have thrown at it. My mind on the other hand is a constant battle.

Train your perseverance, go the distance you know you can't.

Thank you for all the donations. Just 9 days left and 40-something km to go. 150km is just around the corner.

Man vs Wind

Thank you everyone for such an overwhelming number of donations this last week. We have already reached my target amount!

Today I reached 30 kilometers, 20% of my 150 kilometer goal. This means I am mostly on track, though I will need to run for six days next week rather than five.

I have and will continue to incorporate a full-body stretch through and slow movement routine into my mornings. This routine has been pivotal in managing the stress of the increased training volume.

Today was my first run in Cyclone Alfred's weather, however, it will not be the last activity during the intense weather. Tomorrow morning the cyclone will pass through and in its aftermath I expect to march resources through a nontrivial distance of closed roads, downed trees, and damaged power lines. If this march in is necessary, I will log its distance as my activity for that day.

Good luck to everyone on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane for the cyclone ahead. I will see you on the other side.

Let the Games Begin

Tomorrow is my grand start. I debated starting off with a big bang to set the tone for the month, however, I do want to pace myself to prevent an early burn out.

I will start this weekend with a modest 6km on each day, donating 12$ per day. Come the start of next week I will make an assessment of where to place my rest day.

I will do a post run donation for the first few days to set the tone. If this proves to be tedious I will instead do a weekly accumulative donation.

150km here we come.

Run Fast, Run Hard

Last year my Grandmother passed away after battling relentlessly with cancer. This year I will battle relentlessly with the treadmill.

150km in one month puts me at the boundary line of what I think I'm capable of with consistent and dedicated effort. I am currently running 6km every second day, putting me at about 90km per month. A 150km goal will be a massive step up in my training, but not one that isn't surmountable.

I intend to run at a near daily rate of 6km per day. This rate will give me a handful of rest days to use sparingly. The management of these rest days, the accumulation of physical stress from the new training tempo, and the care of my previously torn ACL will present their own unique challenges.

I pledge to run my 150km goal and donate $2 for each kilometer I run.

I also pledge to donate $10 for each kilometer short I am of this goal by the end of March.

I will update this page regularly with my progress, including an end of week review every weekend.
